All-Natural Oven Cleaner

My Dirty Oven

The other night I went to fix dinner. I turned on the oven to preheat it. After a few minutes, smoke started to rise up and fill the kitchen. No worries, I told Prince Charming. Food scraps and grease had fallen to the bottom of the oven, and it would soon burn off. Next thing I know, I see orange flames through my oven door. Oops…

Since we moved into our house, I’ve cleaned my oven zero times…and it’s been 3 years. So, after Prince Charming bravely doused out the flames with baking soda {a good thing to throw on grease fires in the kitchen}, I decided it was time to clean out the oven. But, oh how I HATE to clean the oven {surely, I’m not alone}.

I was determined to use an all-natural cleaner for the job…but would it work?! I am happy to report that I found a method, and YES it really does work!

What you’ll need:
baking soda
spray bottle full of water

Wiping away the baking soda

  • take out your oven racks
  • spray water all over the bottom of the oven. make sure to cover all the grease and grime very well with the water.
  • sprinkle baking soda generously over the water you just sprayed
  • close the oven door and wait 1-3 hours {the longer you wait, the better}
  •  after the wait time is up, open up the oven and start to wipe away the baking soda. as you wipe, the grease and grime will wipe away too! for some tougher, set in stains, you will need to scrub a bit. remember, when you do scrub to make sure you’re scrubbing the baking soda over the stain until it comes up.
  • when you wipe up the baking soda, you can discard it in the the trash can or the sink.
  • after all the baking soda has been removed, wet a clean towel and wipe oven floor down once more.

After first appliacation

It’s really quite amazing that this worked! It was so easy and no nasty fumes from commercial oven cleaners to deal with. Since my oven had not been cleaned in 3 years, I had to do the whole process twice to get my desired results. But there was a huge difference after my first go around.

Happy oven cleaning!

And PS – You can clean the oven racks using baking soda, as well, along with some elbow grease!

PSS – Thanks to Wellness Mama for the tip!
