Oil Pulling

The new year has dawned and Prince Charming and I are waking up from that holiday daze that we’ve been in. Along with waking up, we have embarked on a New Year’s Resolution. And by resolution, I mean something we will try for a month or two and then quite possibly give up. But, then again, maybe the resolution will become a life-long habit Let’s hope the latter is true.

Our resolution for this year: Oil Pulling.

Oil Pulling is an Indian folk remedy that involves swishing oil back and forth in your mouth, similar to what you would do with mouthwash. The idea behind oil pulling is that you are “pulling” the oil between your teeth. This should be done first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking, for 15-20 minutes. Enthusiasts claim that the oil is helping to detoxify your body by gathering up the harmful bacteria that hang out in your mouth.

The Facts:

  • Use 1 tablespoon of unrefined oil. The most popular oils to use are sesame seed, coconut or sunflower. Just make sure it is extra-virgin {which means unrefined}. We chose to use sesame seed oil.
  • Do not gargle. Since the oil is full of harmful bacteria, you don’t want to gargle and take the chance of swallowing it.
  • 15-20 minutes a day. You’re trying to pull long enough to gather up all the nasties in your mouth.
  • Spit it out, but not in the sink. After 15-20 minutes of pulling, the oil will be frothy, white and full of bateria. Try spitting it out in the toilet then immediately flushing it.
  • Brush your teeth immediately afterwards. It’s best to use an all-natural toothpaste.

There are claims that oil pulling has cured everything from allergies to gingivitis to cancer to cracked heels. Hmm…that’s a pretty impressive list. I’m not sure I believe all the claimed benefits, but I am excited to go to the dentist after a month and see if my teeth have improved.

Happy oil pulling!
